It was designed as a way for players to weigh their options about different guilds, by being able to see the guild hall and talk with it's members (as the guild hall was designed as a gathering place for guild members but most guilds now just use it as a base for GvG). Then, when a player makes their choice, they can be promoted to membership position in the desired guild.

It was not meant to be used to battle for certain sides in Alliance Battles, that just happens to be a side-effect of the AB-NPC being in the guild hall. Therefore, eliminating the cost for this purpose is not a necessary update.
Do you draw your arguments from a different universe than everyone else? Why are you elaborating on "the history of guest invites"? Does it have any relevance at all? Even if it did have relevance, what do you base this "history" on?

The majority of guest invites today are used on guesting people for gvg(in the interest of the inviter) or to change sides in ab(in the interest of the invitee). In the first case the cost is not necessarily an obstacle as the person paying the fee is also the person with the interest in the guest invite. In the second case the holder of the interest and the person paying the fee is not the same. But regardless of this difference you still have not provided any valid reason for why it should cost money at all. Aside from your creative history claim that is. "Newspapers have always cost money, therefore they should always cost money. I don't believe in this thing called Internet".

What's the point in making an argument on these boards when people lack reading comprehension skills?

Add to the OP suggestion, do not limit the invitation to 8 hours, leave it open until cancelled by the person extending the invite.

Seriously no one has bothered to actually give a reason why invites of any sort should cost gold.

You are asking for the impossible. The gold amount is so low it doesn't act as a gold sink or prevent spam invites. It accomplishes nothing besides annoying PvP only players.

The cost is trivial. Are you telling me that as a PvP player, you don't have the means to amass a few hundred gold for a few invites? That it bothers you to spend such a small amount of gold on these invites?

If the issue is having to invite someone to your guild on multiple occasions as a guest, the solution is to have them leave their guild and join yours.
